I think it's very important to get enough sleep each and every day to prevent the feeling of mental haze in the morning. Sleepy people show less coordinated activity. Also, due to lack of sleep, people can have more severe memory impairments. Memory strengthening can be affected in people who sleep a few hours less than what they originally slept. Sleep is nesessary for us if we want the most out our memory and the best coordination in our daily lives.
FEMA wants to build the homes as best as possible and throw the people back into them. Becasue of the terrible damage space has run out to house the people whos houses were destroyed, its a hard time but i dont think that the people should be forced back to the place where they have nothing left.FEMA is putting forth "an essential package of necessary fixes so that people can get back into their homes," but they have said "This is not a complete repair." This isnt the way to treat the people that have lost everything, they are barely making an effort and in my opinion the houses should be fixed to the full extent because the winter is coming. The people need everyones help.
Recently, The Petraeus Scandal has been taking up a lot of news headlines. The former head of the CIA was accused of having an extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell. Paula Broadwell then started to send threatening e-mails to Jill Kelley, a family friend of Gen. David Petraeus. Kelley then complains to FBI agents located in Tampa, Florida, about the threats sent to her by Broadwell. Petraeus admitted the affair to the new director of the CIA, which was suspiciously after Election Day. The scary thing about this and so many other scandals in politics is that these are the people we’re supposed to be looking up to, and how could the director of the CIA do this? If the people in charge don’t set a good example, more chaotic things will occur. We need to be able to trust people like our president and directors of the CIA, but we really can’t anymore.
I think that this is a very important article for my friends Zach Zlotnick and Brian Balkam to read. Alot of people were into this years presidential election and this article is about comments made by top republican advisors. It talks about what they think they did wrong in this election and point to remarks made by Obama and Biden as the main cause for Romney's downfall. Along with Romney not being able to outline a specific agenda.
This is just a little clip of a story of a man who had a tragic mishap in a football game when he was only 20 years old. The video pretty much explains it but if you want to see the whole story I am sure you can find it somewhere else. I picked this because of its impact on people who are paralyzed everywhere, it gives them inspiration and proof that they can do anything if they just try hard enough. That young kid is now a man and goes around the USA speaking to children and people everywhere on the safety of tackling in football.
http://cnnradio.cnn.com/2012/11/14/rebranding-homelessness/?hpt=hp_bn1 This article talks about how Homelessness needs to be branded and re-branded more. More people need to be informed and aware of homeless people and their issues. I think that this article is important. There are not enough people who are aware of homeless people. Sure, it may not look like there are a lot of homeless people in our town, but there is probably more than you think. Poverty is everywhere and something needs to be done to fix it. The more people aware of homelessness, the quicker we can understand their problems, and hopefully fix those problems. When people in our society think about homeless people, they think dirty and mean. Not all homeless people are dirty and mean and can actually be very nice and educated people that just could find or got fired from a job. I think that more programs need to be implemented for homeless people so that they can get back on their feet and have better participation in society.
http://www.grindtv.com/outdoor/blog/41673/mysterious+stranding+on+irish+beach+involved+up+to+50000+starfish/ I think this article is interesting because it seems that no one’s knows just how the 50,000 starfish got washed up on the shore. There are theories that it was because they were feeding on mussels when a storm hit the seabed and they got washed ashore with other sub-tidal animals. But the even stranger thing is that none of these starfish were attached to mussels and the starfish were the only sub-tidal animals on the isolated Irish beach. Starfish don’t have blood or brains and essentially their blood is filtered sea water. I though this article was very “end of the world” and thought it was an interesting read.
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/11/14/staten-islanders-offer-to-school-fema-after-sandy-wrath/ One of the areas that got hit hard from Hurricane Sandy was Staten Island. Sandy left most of the island completely destroyed and many without homes. Staten Island home owners tell Fox News how amazing their community has been working together to help one another when the government did not come to the rescue right away. Traci Cangiano, the owner of a real estate company, was driving around Staten Island with her daughter when her daughter asked if they could help. Cangiano turner her office into a “makeshift warehouse” where people donated thousand pieces of aid parcels to the people of Staten Island. It is people like Cangiano and her daughter who stepped up and helped the people who lost everything from Sandy. The government did not respond right away and it is sad to think what would have happened to these victims if the community did not come together and help. “New York Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, who represents some of the worst-hit neighborhoods, said that Staten Islanders came together in the days after the storm as soon as they realized the government would fall short.” President Obama is preparing to come visit Staten Island, Malliotakis and others welcome him, but it is not enough for him to just make an appearance. The community needs the President to stay and figure out how to rebuilt the town and help get these people back into a normal lifestyle. Sandy needs to be an example for the future, the government needs to be better prepared to step up and help right away.
The article talks about how NYU Langome medical center had to be evacuated because there generators went under water. This means the staff at NYU had to get sick patients out of a hospital that had no lights, no power. A result of this led to the neo-natal section having to carry 9 sick babies to the next hospital. A scene doctors never wanted to see. It also highlights the terrible events that happened because of Sandy’s destruction.
http://www.lipower.org/stormcenter/ LIPA has restored power to 1.1 million people who had lost it during the bipolar weather within the past two weeks. It "required the largest electric restoration effort in Long Island history." This storm was worse than anyone could have imagined, and living next to the vice president of LIPA himself, I cannot say enough how much it angers me when people talk down about LIPA. An entire island was out of power, it was obviousy going to take a while to get everyone back on track. LIPA should be applauded for their around the clock efforts.
Since the presidential election, many U.S. citizens have become unhappy. A lot of people disagree with the election, causing some states to petition which in the long run, plan to secede from the union. There are a handful of states beginning to sign their petition while otherss have exceeded their needed 25,000. If these states become successful, they will be their own country, basically. I think it'll be interesting to see what states come together and break away and which ones don't. The actions taken by our re-elected president will also be interesting.
This article describes what a modern day would be impossible. The idea of it is almost as real as unicorns. The idea that this "New Confederacy" can last as long of the confederacy of the Civil War is impossible. The modern military is so much stronger than it was and can wipe out huge amounts of population in the matter of minutes. Although it's very unlikely that this would happen the president could also use other methods. In the modern day economy he could use this against these states till they couldn't survive any longer. In my opinion secession is a treasonous act and the federal government feels the same. To secede because Obama was elected makes it even worse and makes me want to say. If you love this country so much then why would you ever think about leaving it? If these people are so rooted in their beliefs that they can’t waiver at all then honestly who needs them.
Within the past few weeks, Long Island was hit with one of the most tragic storms it has ever had. Hurricane Sandy left many houses destroyed, most houses dark and several huge problems. One of the biggest problems that came up from Hurricane Sandy was the lack of gasoline on the island. Gas was extremely limited and they even had to start making rules and regulations in order to get gas. In this article above you will read about how four Long Island gas stations were accused of charging customers almost $9 per gallon. Not only did they charge people with these high expenses, but the stations only told them the prices after they filled their cars up. Hurricane Sandy was extremely devestating for Long Island, but what people are doing in order to make it through these tough times is making matters ten times worse.
This article tells of a tragic story in which 4 people died and 17 were hospitalized after a train crash. As a veterens parade was passing over the tracks unfortunately the train came and hit them.It seems as if all devices were working properly, and more investigation is set to take place by today. This incident, obviously a tragic accident breaks my heart. Our veterans and their families did not deserve anything like this . Especially on a day they were meant to be honored.
Hurricane Sandy had many devastating effects after it hit the eastern coast. One of the major effects was the gas shortage. From the hurricane, gas stations were not getting shipments of gas in because cars couldn’t get into New Jersey or New York to deliver gas. People were already panicking about getting their power back and now they had another reason to panic. Families needed gas to run their generators and cars. This gas shortage made people go psychotic. Fights broke out at gas stations due to people standing in line waiting for close to four hours. Guns were brought out and knifes. Also, gas stations started gauging their prices and made gas much more expensive to buy. This shortage brought out the worst in society.
This article is about President Obama flying over the disaster sites of Hurricane Sandy and visiting the many people who are still in need, even after 17 days after the terrible storm destroyed many things in the boroughs, Long Island and New Jersey. Some found it encouraging that the President wanted to come and see the damage, but others exclaim that he was “too late” and that the damage was already done. Some believed that they needed the President two weeks ago, when everyone was focused on the election rather than the victims of this devastation. I believe it’s encouraging to see someone that literally runs the country come down and see what is being done. I think it’s awesome that the President of the United States was just a mere hour away from us. It’s terrifying that 17 days after the storm there are still people without power, heat and the basic necessities to survive. I took a trip to Breezy Point and the Rockaways last weekend and was shocked to see the amount of damage. I do also agree with some of the people living there, the President should have been there the day or two after, not over two weeks after.
The article explains whether or not the climate change had a big affect on Hurricane Sandy. It talks about how many people believe that the climate change created this storm and the recent nor'easter, however, research shows that the change in climate didn't create the storm. The article also talks about whether or not storms like this are going to be a normal thing for New York. I believe that even though this storm wasn't caused by the climate change it is something to be aware of. We need to make sure that the climate change doesn't eventually lead to another storm like this because there were to many lives lost and to much destruction.
Due to the hurricane, gas stations have been taking advantage of New Yorkers and gouging gas prices. Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman sent out letters to four gas stations on Long Island accused of price-gouging. It’s important that Long Islanders are more aware of what gas stations are doing and that they are being held accountable for their actions. Gas has gone as high as nine dollars which is absolutely ridiculous. Be aware of the gas price before spending hours on line and then spend an unnecessary amount of cash on gas.
In this article above, a nine year old girl was in a car accident where her car was hit head on, leaving her paralyzed from the chest down. She was hit by a drunk driver who was caught and being convicted. Chilli, the little girl, wrote her prosecutor a four page letter saying all that had happened and what she was going through. It was read in court and brought everyone to tears. She hopes to at least get an apology out of the man that caused her to be paralyzed and she also wants to meet him. He is getting ten years in jail and he admitted to being guilty. I think that the little girl was very brave to write a letter to the man who caused her to be paralyzed. She sounds very brave and like she doesn’t have any remorse towards the drunk driver. She seems very optimistic about her whole situation which is so inspiring because she is only nine years old. She knows what she wants and she wants to be able to walk again. She explains some of the hardships she has faced such as not being able to do things on her own anymore but she says that she “try’s” and that makes you feel so bad for her because she is so young and has so much more ahead of her.
Tornados, blizzards, nor ‘easters, hurricanes. The East Coast has seemed to get it all especially in the past decade. Have you ever thought about our risk about getting a tsunami? The East Coast may now suffer from the small risk of getting a tsunami. If this tsunami were to happen, it would most likely be caused by and underwater avalanche or landslide. It could also be possibly caused by collapsing volcanoes or earthquakes. Most of this is a result of the continental slope, where the North American continental crust ends into the Atlantic crust. Earthquakes have happened in the past near the East Coast of North America. An earthquake struck near Newfoundland, causing an underwater landslide creating a tsunami hitting Newfoundland that was catastrophic. Another place that is capable of creating a dangerous tsunami is the Puerto Rico trench.Scientist don't pose it as much as a threat. The collapse of a volcanoe in the Canary Islands can possibly cause a tsunami that is capable of reaching the East Coast. More studies of certain subduction zones and fault lines near the East Coast are being made to determine the threat of tsunamis in the future. By looking at the effect of the water from hurricane Sandy on Long Island, I believe that a 20-40 foot tsunami could be catastrophic if it hit in that area. Maybe it could even wash out Long Island?
http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/14/justice/florida-impersonation-jail/index.html?hpt=ju_c A Florida teenager was sentenced Wednesday to a year in jail after he was convicted of four felonies linked to his impersonation last year of a physician assistant in a hospital emergency room. Matthew Scheidt, 18, will then spend a year under house arrest, followed by eight years' probation. Scheidt was convicted in August of two counts of practicing medicine without a license and two counts of impersonating a physician assistant at Osceola Regional Medical Center in August 2011, when he was 17. Scheidt told investigators that the ruse began when he went to the hospital to get a badge for his job as a clerk at a doctor's office across the street. But someone botched the paperwork.
I feel that this teen was trying to learn as much as he possibly could but it was wrong to impersonate being a certified physician. No one should feel just being in a hospital and touching patients when they know they aren’t licensed to do so. The medical center should have looked up back up information and they didn’t do a good enough job of examining the teen. I believe he got off lucky with a year of house arrest and eight years of probation. Medical centers and other professional places should check more on the history of workers and trainers to see if they really have knowledge and are truthful about resumes.
I was really interested with this article because it was about the significant strides that have been made to enact anti-smoking laws across the United States. Back in 2000, only one large city out of America’s 50 largest cities had laws preventing people from smoking in public places such as restaurants, bars, and private workplaces. By the year 2012 however, 30 of them were covered by anti-smoking laws. Also in 2000, there were no states with statewide anti-smoking policies but in 2010, there were 26. I think in another ten years, laws against smoking will be much more strict than they already are.
This article here discusses the events currently taking place in Israel. Hamas troops have been firing missiles on the city recently and Israel has began to strike back and fight to stop the attacks. This whole conflict is of extreme importance to the United States because of our relations with Israel. Obama has made it clear that we support Israel as a nation and will help to defend them if needed. Due to the events currently taking place, if the situation becomes more out of hand, our troops will most likely be sent to Israel to aid in the fighting and to help Israel stop the Hamas fighters. This whole article gives an amazing insight into the reality of the events taking place. While it does not ever say that the US will enter into any new conflicts, I strongly believe that if the fighting escalates too quickly, then our troops will be sent in. In conjunction with having to deal with fighting in Israel, I feel that if we start parading into any more Middle Eastern countries, we might potentially start a war with Iran, who we already have very tense relationships with.
This article demonstrates how random accidents can occur at any time and that we truly aren't as "invincible" as we think. The article explains how four army Sargent s were killed in a tragic train crash. A parade in West Texas had been saluting U.S army troops when a train had crashed into a flat bread truck. Some people managed to jump off the truck before the crash, however four are dead and ten others remain hospitalized. The lights and gates around the accident area were working properly, so how the crash occurred the way it had is still unknown. Unexpected incidents such as this are capable of occurring to anyone at anytime. Our generation has to realize that we aren't "invincible" and that we should cherish every day we are gifted of experiencing.
Hundreds of homes in New York City are to be demolished because they were damaged by hurricane Sandy. This article talks a lot about how New Yorkers aren't used to enduring this much damage, simply because we are fortunate enough to live in an area that does not face a lot of natural disasters. However, there is a lot of work to be done here. Reading this article I wondered, how about rebuilding rather than more destructing? What is happening to the people who own these homes? Those are the things that we need to be more worried about.
This article explains that basically, the whole problem that we went through with the storm and restoring power is not actually the people working on the streets for LIPA trying to help out, but instead the managers who run and opperate the company. Many of the people working in the streets are doing as much as humanly possible to help out. A lot of the men working have been working many over time hours and aren't even from the TriState area. It also explains how LIPA acts as a scape-goat for all the destruction and loss that Long Islanders have experienced throughout the last few weeks. A scape-goat is someone who all the blame can be put on in a ahrd time. Since they were responsible for restoring the power, LIPA is blamed for all the problems, however it may not be all their fault.

http://gma.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/texas-girl-paralyzed-drunk-driver-leaves-jury-tears-151145291--abc-news-topstories.html

Maybe it could even wash out Long Island?
http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/14/justice/florida-impersonation-jail/index.html?hpt=ju_c
A Florida teenager was sentenced Wednesday to a year in jail after he was convicted of four felonies linked to his impersonation last year of a physician assistant in a hospital emergency room.
Medical centers and other professional places should check more on the history of workers and trainers to see if they really have knowledge and are truthful about resumes.
http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2012/11/15/anti-smoking-laws-spreading-in-large-cities/?hpt=hp_t4&hpt=us_c2
I think in another ten years, laws against smoking will be much more strict than they already are.
http://www.foxnews.com/world/2012/11/15/3-dead-after-gaza-rocket-strikes-southern-israel/?intcmp=related
In conjunction with having to deal with fighting in Israel, I feel that if we start parading into any more Middle Eastern countries, we might potentially start a war with Iran, who we already have very tense relationships with.
http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/15/us/texas-parade-deaths/index.html?hpt=us_c2
This article demonstrates how random accidents can occur at any time and that we truly aren't as "invincible" as we think. The article explains how four army Sargent s were killed in a tragic train crash. A parade in West Texas had been saluting U.S army troops when a train had crashed into a flat bread truck. Some people managed to jump off the truck before the crash, however four are dead and ten others remain hospitalized. The lights and gates around the accident area were working properly, so how the crash occurred the way it had is still unknown. Unexpected incidents such as this are capable of occurring to anyone at anytime. Our generation has to realize that we aren't "invincible" and that we should cherish every day we are gifted of experiencing.
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/18/nyregion/in-new-york-hundreds-of-storm-battered-homes-face-the-bulldozer.html?ref=todayspaper&_r=1&
Those are the things that we need to be more worried about.
http://www.newsday.com/topics/Long_Island_Power_Authority
