Security Solutions

After the many tragic school shootings that have taken place in our country in the past few years, what can we do to as a nation to make sure our children are safe? Reflect on the national, state, and local responsibilities associated with securing our schools. Also, reflect on our district in Smithtown. Do you feel that current security procedures in place are working? If not, what can we do to change our current system? Be specific and detailed with your responses and offer solutions to the problem.

As a Nation what we can do is simple which is put more protection. Have more security and put detectors specifically for the use of guns. We have the technology for it and even though it may cost money it will be worth it to prevent more people from being killed in schools. We should have more security and we in Smithtown are doing well, but we need more protection just in case of emergency. We need detectors in the school to prevent such tragedies. Our strategy in school is working, but there can be tragic times anytime so we need more protection. We can change the system by putting on more protection regardless of cost cause our lives our more important than taxes. Overall we have to do whatever it takes to prevent future tragic shootings from happening again.

Over the years, I feel school shootings have never really affected anyone. Obviously they affected the schools they occured in, families, and friends in the area, but a shooting is Colorado hasn't really affected us. Due to the last school shooting in Sandy Hook Elementary, I think every school in the country is taking precautions when it comes to safety. Nobody thought a shooting would occur in an Elementary School where innocent little kids would lose their lifes. Now, in the past couple weeks, everyone has done many things to keep their children safe. Schools are a lot harder with safety drills and allowing visitors to come into the school. I know Smithtown has gotten a lot harder with school safety. For example, members of our community were not allowed to come into the school yesterday to donate blood at the blood drive. As I understand outsiders coming in could be dangerous, every visitor has to sign in. I think schools can try as hard as they want and do everything they can to protect their students, but if someone wants to do something, they will find a way.

Unfortunately there have been several hundred school shootings and unfortunately it's only getting worse. I do believe schools are trying really hard to keep the kids safe, but they can clearly do a better job otherwise none of this would even be happening in the first place. Security should be much tighter than it is today and I feel that this should apply to Smithtown East as well. No offense, but our school's secutiry system should be a lot stronger than it is because I am constantly hearing about kids leaving campus without getting caught. If our secutiry guards were keeping a closer eye on the schools surroundings, entrences and exits then this wouldn't be happening. Kid's cars were getting keyed and not one security guard was around to witness it. I feel like our school is so big and we have so many kids in it that the very few school security guards that we have won't protect all of us from getting hurt or being harmed.

Currently, our school security is terrible. They are old, slow, unarmed, and all the doors are open. At any time anyone can come in and if armed, they could kill and security guard that tried to get in there way. It is almost pointless to have them on the payroll because they can "secure" nothing.

I personally feel that the security at our school isn’t very good. There are so many doors that are unlocked and people can sneak into. It’s pretty easy to sneak into a high school or middle school. There are so many accessible doors at our school. Elementary schools are much safer with locked doors and normally only one entrance. Also, I feel that security guards should be required to be strong and fit. The security guards need to be able think on their feet and train as a cop or something along those lines. I do not feel that security guards should not be allowed to carry guns. I think it would make people feel more nervous and scared at school because someone could try and steal a gun from a security guard. I also feel that our school should have more security guards to make the school feel safer and the doors should be locked throughout the school day. They also should stop everyone person who walks through the school doors and check their bags to make sure they are not carrying any weapon or anything dangerous.

The national school shootings over the years have been tragic, and new precautions should be placed in all schools. The Smithtown School District does have security guards, but I don't know if they could really stop an armed gunman. It's important for schools to have bulletproof glass windows so armed gunman can't shoot their way into the schools, and it's also important to lock every door in the entire school. I feel that our security procedures need to be improved because we need to protect our students better.

I agree that there have been way too many tragic shootings in the last couple years. I believe the best way to make schools safer is to have metal detectors at the doors of every school; it would make the process of getting into school slower but would make everything much safer. I feel like our school nothing bad would ever happen, but I guess every school feels that way until something happens but then it’s too late.

Clearly, our current security system's in place are not working because innocent lives are still being taken from school shootings that could have been prevented. I honestly believe new rules and regulations need to be made to control the amount of guns being sold in this country. How many more people are going to be shot before the government does something about this? The fact that kids around the country including me do not feel safe going to school is an absolute outrage. It really saddens me to think that virtually the safest place for children has turned into a war zone.

After the very tragic events that have happened in schools over the past couple years, I believe that schools all over the country need to intensify their security systems. As a nation I think regulations for security should be set all over the nation throughout elementary, middle, high schools and universities. Security guards should block every door to schools and their should also be secutiry at the main entrance of every school in which any trespasser must provide identification in order to show they are related to a student in the building. The security at Smithtown High School East deffinitely needs to be intensified in my opinion. Sometimes there are not even guards at the entrances and when there are they barely even question the people entering. We need guards who are ready for any situation and are questioning to any person entering the school. Obviously, the current security systems are not working because of all the tradgedies that have occured. The nation needs to step up the regulations and provide better security if they want to keep kids in school safe.

Keeping schools safe so that no other shootings occur is pretty difficult. There are a lot of open doors at schools for people to enter and if the doors are locked someone usually opens the door from the inside to let the person in anyway. The only real way to keep schools totally safe would be to have armed security guards or police officers watching every door and checking students backpacks everyday. People would also have to be checked to make sure their not hiding any weapons in their clothes. This would be really difficult to do because there are so many students and many people arrive just a few minutes before first period starts. The only other way to try and prevent shooting from happening is to have police officers in schools instead of security guards. In Smithtown I feel that the security guards wouldn't be able to do much to stop a shooter. The security guards don't have any weapons and many of them are older and probaly wouldn't be able to chase someone that is in the school. I feel that there is ways to try and prevent shootings from happening but I don't think there is any one way to totally stop it.

Our country as a whole needs to come together and create a better solution for our schools. We need better protection. I think that it is terrible that this should even be a topic for society and for our country. I think that it is even worse that there are people out there that would go and kill so many children. I think that each school should have police men and security at every door, at least until this whole thing blows over. I think that our school as a whole has decent security but it does need to improve. I believe that as a society and as a country we need to come together and fix the problems as a whole.

It is so shocking to see that shootings are still occuring after the horrible school schooting in conneticutl. I feel like people will never get the message across. If these shootings are continueing to happen, then I really don’t believe that our country is take the neccessary and proper steps to make the country a safer place. It is also extremely sickening to see that now the children on the United States now face the danger of being shot when they go to get an education. Most schools do tend to have security guards on duty. The question is are these security guards capable of stopping a shooter? Security does need to increase in schools with trained guards at every possible opening. This may result in higher taxed to pay for all this, but I think it is worth childrens lives to pay more money.

I think there are many factors involved with securing our schools. I think that securing our schools is vital. These children are the future and their protection is so important. I personally don’t believe that the security procedures are working. I think that security should be bulked up maybe not as heavily as certain city schools or schools in Boston but heavier security is necessary. I don’t think that the security guards that we have in our school are physically capable of defending this school so many of these security guards are quite old. We should hire younger security personnel and I think we should have student keep their School ids on them at all times.

In essentially every place, people want to have the peace of mind that they are safe. In a place like a school especially, parents, teachers and of course students all want to know that they are safe. After the tragedy in Sandy Hook, i think a true realization that change needs to come was brought up. We can't potentially have our kids exposed to danger in a place of learning. School should crack down; make it harder to enter a school and limiting the accessibility of the school to potential threats. I know in our school alone, though most security guards are ex-cops; they are too old to be able to effectively protect every person in this school. Hiring younger and fit guards can help reduce possibility of danger in a school. I also feel like at least one guard should have a gun for obvious safety precautions.

The recent events have been tragic. The sheer violence and devastation that has been left by these shooters is unimaginable. I truly feel for all of the families who lost loved ones. In terms of security, I feel that prior to these shootings, there has been a lack of security and a lot of very loose actions by security in schools everywhere. Because of the shootings, I feel that there will be a large increase at schools everywhere. However, I have had this discussion with my parents many times, and in every discussion we come to the same conclusion that if someone wants to get into a school and horribly, shoot a child, they will find a way and if they have a weapon, they will most likely not hesitate to shoot an elder. For Smithtown's purposes, I feel that the security guards should be armed, younger, ad in quality physical shape. However, there is always a risk with armed personnel in the school. If they were ever attacked, the risk of them being disarmed and the attacker using thew weapon increases. No matter how many precautions or security measures we establish, shootings like these will occur, not all of the time, but they will occurr, and every time it will remind us of how much more needs to be done.

Personally, I feel that the security at our school isn't very good. I know that's a general statement, but it is seriously so easy for any student to walk in and out of this school without anyone knowing. If, God forbid, someone wanted to come walking into our school with a weapon-- they easily could. Tons of doors are always left open and there are no security guards by those doors. As far as improvements in security, maybe we treat more of our entrances and exits in this school like the visitors entrance with sign in and sign out sheets so the school at least can keep tracks of the names of people walking in and out of the buildings.

In my opinion, schools across the country need to step up security. Smithtown East definitely lacks security and is kind of sad. Sure the security guards we have now are super friendly, funny, and hardworking, but if something bad were to happen, they wouldn’t get the job done. Instead of employing multiple old security guards, we should instead hire young people without jobs who have experience or degrees in criminal justice. Changes need to be made and if security guards were better and younger, kids would be less likely to do bad things.

In our school today the school security is a bunch of old retired man and woman they wouldn’t be able to protect us in case of emergency. Schools these days need to be equip with young and armed security guards that would be able to take action in case a gunman were to come into the school. I agree with Zack we shouldn’t be paying security guards if they aren’t able to “secure” our school.

The school shootings have posed a huge threat to society. With advanced technology we should be able to detect weapons and where our children have access to guns and such. We have decent security in Smithtown but pretty much anyone can come into the school because the doors are all opened and there arent many security guards. Schools should be alot stricter with who enters the school especially in cars.

There is absolutely nothing that we can do to ensure our children’s safety. To be truthful there will always be terrible people who find a way to hurt others, but we cannot live in fear. We should just teach children how to be more aware of our surroundings and how to deal in situations. Our district could use better security. Almost all the doors are open to the school, so it would be easy for somebody to just walk in. We should also have more security outside, around the school.

To be honest, I think our security system at East is not that great at all. It’s so easy to sneak out of school and just as easy to sneak back in. With all these terrible tragedies occurring I think Smithtown should definitely take more precautions and up the security so it’s not as easy to just get into the school, maybe even lock all the doors or something similar.
