I know, as do all Americans, what happened in Newtown is the most tragic event to ever occur on United States soil. When innocent children are killed there will always be a call to action to make sure it doesn’t happen again. However, our second amendment right to bear arms should and cannot be denied. It is not guns that kill people, people kill people. With this in mind, it is our mental health system that needs to be reworked. If people could be properly diagnosed, mentally, like Adam Lanza, then we may not have shootings in Aurora, Colorado and in Columbine. If the institutions that deal with these types of people can be reformed it may be possible that tragedies, such as these, will no longer happen.
The tragic events that have been occurring in society more and more recently are so sickening that something definitely needs to be done to stop such horrifying things from occurring. Besides the theater shooting, most of the shootings seem to occur in school, so maybe school security needs to be stepped up. Although principles and administrators feel as though the school is protected, it is so easy to sneak in and out of the school and leave; all you have to do is walk out the back door. Maybe all the doors should be locked from the outside so that you have no way of getting in. Also have just the visitor’s entrance open with a metal detector when you walk in. As sad and sickening it is that you have to do these things, it’s important to assure safety. I can’t imagine ever getting over such a terrible tragedy and I don’t think you ever do. Something needs to be put to an end whether its gun control, or helping the mental illness.
This is, without a doubt, a tragedy. So many innocent lives were lost and the whole situation truly sickens me. However, this makes me realize that we need to take steps to ensure our safety. It's easy to look at situations like this and say "it'll never happen to me," but did you ever think parents of kindergarteners at sandy hook thought it was going to happen to their children? Obviously, there was a series of things that went wrong in Lanza's life. I don't know if his mother ever really got him help for his illness, but if she didn't, she should have. We are concerned that this will soon become a trend in different places all over the world. We need to really question Lanza's motive here. Was it his mental illness, or was it something else? Did he want to die as an ordinary person or, as sick as it may sound, did he want to leave this world being well known? The media needs to stop reporting endlessly for weeks about this topic, because let's be honest, this is exactly what the killer wanted. He may not be famous, but infamy is close enough.

There are various ways to prevent future violence from occurring. First off, we would have to stop talking about our problems our society has ‘cause were all aware of them. We have to start solving things instead of going on and on about gun control back and forth and all these other things that may affect violence. Let’s put It this way, we do what we have to do in this country in order to prevent future problems. There should be different regulations to gun control depending on where they live. If people need to rely on food by hunting they should be allowed, but keep their guns in places where no one else would ever know and locked up. People would want to keep guns in their homes for safety, but they can use that money instead on having high tech alarms if someone tries to break into their house and for better protection. I think people who are mentally ill should be treated often and keep away from other people if they have a good chance of hurting someone when they get mad. The media should stop talking about these problems and take the time to actually solve them by coming up with ideas to protect people and prevent them from happening again. Just do whatever it takes to prevent a problem in relation to this from happening again regardless of what needs to be done. Only if it may affect other people that can cause other problems.
The events that occurred in Newtown are absolutely tragic and there are no words that can be said to sympathize for those who lost someone. Everybody believes that something like this will never happen to them, until it does! It is scary to see the wave of violence that is slowly moving its way around the country. I feel that in response to these attacks across the country, more attention must be paid those children who at higher risk of endangering themsleves and others. There is no need to lock up the kids with these handicaps or illnesses, but they deserve a higher amount of attention and respect from everybody else. It is up to parents and teachers to recognize these people and students, and they are a part of the small group of people who have some power in these situations.
This is defiantly the most sickening tragedy I’ve ever heard. So many innocent lives have been taking because of a mentally ill man. Tragedies like these should seriously be prevented and something major should be taken into action to stop this from happening. Enough is enough, from Columbine, Colorado, and now innocent little 6 and 7 year olds and teachers. I could not even imagine the serious pain the parents are facing.
The tragedy that occured in Newtown is sickening. I can't even imagine what drives someone to commit such a horrible crime. The nation needs to find better ways to keep everyone safe and make sure something like this doesn't happen again. One way to fix this problem is to make sure that there are background checks on people buying guns. Also, people that are mentally ill need to get help. Someone who is a parent of a mentally ill person needs to get their child help so that they don't commit crimes like this. The nation also needs to step up security. These crimes can be avoided if people were taking notice of what other people were carrying around. Sandy Hook Elementary could have noticed that someone was entering the school that wasn't supposed to be there. Also, we need to keep weapons away from people that are mentally ill because we have no idea what someone might do with them. Security in this country needs to ensure that tragedys like this never happen again.
Every time I hear about this horrible tragedy it breaks my heart. I will never understand how somebody could intentionally kill eighteen children. Clearly he was mentally ill, but that is not an excuse. Something needs to be put in order to become more aware of these types of people. As far as gun control goes, gun control should be a lot stricter. There is no reason why people outside of law enforcement should have guns other than for hunting. I understand that some people enjoy hunting, but other than that why do regular people need to own guns? It is also not right to teach kids under the age of eighteen how to fire a gun, there is no reason for it.
Society is going into a downward spiral and horrible things seem to happen more often. The shooting in the movie theater back in July was so sad and terrible; however, shooting a bunch of innocent 6 year olds seems even worse. How can someone shoot into a classroom and kill babies who are so pure and innocent? They all had so much ahead of them and all the other children at Sandy Hook Elementary have had their innocence ripped away from them. I feel that gun control laws should become stricter when it comes to background checks. However, I think it’s even more important that parents begin to realize that if their child is mentally ill and has problems, that it’s time to take action. Being in denial is not going to help their child but make matters worse. I also believe it’s imperative that mental illnesses are taken even more seriously and treated properly. These individuals need help and we as a society need to reach out to them. I also feel that school security should become stricter and improved. We cannot afford another tragedy like this in our society.
I don't think there is a way to prevent future violence from happening. The sad truth is, if it's going to be done, someone will find a way. Someone always finds a way to do something. I think that jail isn't the answer. People who are mentally ill definitely need help, but they should be in a mental hospital, not jail. I think it's hard for parents with mentally ill children to let go of them so they can get help, but I think they need to as soon as they can in order to protect the rest. I think patience plays a huge role with their children so they don't start to act up. The Sandy Hook Elementary shooting was a horrible incident but if everyone takes action, we can improve measures to try and avoid these things. Again, I don't think there is a way to completely prevent the violence, but if we all take action, we can lower statistics.
The Newtown shooting in my opinion is one of the most tragic events to ever occur in the United States. 27 innocent lives were taken, including 18 children. Every time someone even begins to mention this tragedy, I get so incredibly saddened. I can’t even imagine what the loved ones of those that passed are feeling right now. My heart goes out to all the victims and families that were involved in the shooting. Recently, I learned a very sickening statistic that there are 270 million privately owned guns in America. Simply the thought of this makes my stomach turn. I believe that the right to bear arms should be limited and controlled for now on. How many more people are going to get shot before the government realizes that gun control in America is way out of hand? By controlling gun dispersal, I think that crime and violence will slow down. I also believe that more safety features should be added to each school around the country to protect the lives of innocent children and students.
This tragedy that occurred in Newtown CT is so very unfortunate it’s not fair that those children didn’t even get a chance to experience their life. I can’t even begin to imagine the pain those parents are feeling. I was thinking about it the other day and I couldn’t ever imagine being in school and getting a phone call from my mom telling me that my 3 year old sister is dead. Too many emotions and thoughts would be running through my mind. I don’t think that the guns are the problem I believe that Adams mental illness was the problem. None of us know the full story because Adam also killed his mother but questions like was there any warning signs that he was going to do something like this? Did Lanza’s mother know that he had a mental illness? If she did why didn’t she get him treatment? Could she not afford the treatment? Did she think she could handle him on her own? I believe that there should be more affordable mental illness treatment available and more than one option. We can prevent this by figuring out the problem and discovering the warning signs before anything tragic happens.
There are no words to describe this tragic occurrence in Newtown Connecticut. I feel so incredibly bad for the parents, families, friends, and all loved ones who lost someone in such a terrible way. This young kids, administrators and teachers, had no reason to loose their lives and didn’t deserve this type of unexplainable occurrence that occurred. Mental illnesses, in my opinion definitely need to be paid close attention to. For parents with mentally challenged children, it is crucial to protect them from harming anyone and teaching them morals from the day they are born. Although parents cannot control everyone one of their child’s actions it is very important for them to do whatever they can to teach them what is right and put them in special programs if necessary. Tragedies like the Newton Elementary school shooting cannot keep occurring or the world will quickly turn into a terrible unsafe place. People need to control their loved ones with mental illnesses and do whatever they can to prevent them from harming anyone! I do believe that the Sandy Hook shooting is a big deal to our society. Things like this cannot just be forgotten so quickly. People need to take action and provide more safety in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, stores, businesses and everywhere! All killings that have been performed in the past have been tragic, and each one should be a sign to up the safety everywhere. Stricter laws should be imposed and harsh punishments should be held for those who don’t follow.
(Sorry this is a little late... haha)
The events that happened on friday will be engraved in my mind for an eternity. And I wasn't even there to witness it. It takes a cruel person to kill another human being, but to kill children? I personally hope there is a special place in hell for someone like that. Children are truly our future, they are innocent, just starting to get into this world, but some, unfourtunately are never given the oppurtunity to find themselves in this crazy thing we call the world. Let's think about this: for the 20 children that died, that's 20 kids who never had a first awkward kiss outside the gym on a cold Feburary day, that's 20 birthday's that will forever put a metaphorical knife in a parent's heart, that's 20 kids who had the oppurtunity to cure cancer, to cure AIDS, and in one instant, they lost that chance forever. Now, yes, I agree, the shooter (who I believe doesn't deserve his name to be said, anywhere) should have suffered, just as those children did after they simply went to school one day. But, to blame it on mental illness? That's just ridiculous. My brother, who is 11 years old, and honestly, is the purest, most perfect human being on the planet, and much nicer than anyone I know, has autism. Does this mean he's going to shoot up a school? To make that argument is simply cruel and invalid. Every case of Autism, Aspergers, etc. is different, and to look down on those who have these disorders after this tragedy is a complete and utter outrage. That's like saying every dog will bite you after one already has. Now, I understand people are freighten, just as I am when I walk into the school I am supposed to feel safe in, and cringe at every sudden movement. Or how I feel when I see my 6 year old neighbor come home from her day in 1st grade and I can breathe a sigh of relief she's safe, but to pin this on a spectrum disorder is completely false. As for gun control, America is a free country, and to say someone can serve our country and shoot others who are against us, but not a intruder in the home, is not right. But, I do believe that stricter laws should be put in place. Let's not have one more child be scared to go to school, or one more parent afraid to send them to place where they are destine for success, not death.
It is absolutely horrifying to see such a trend occuring in the United States.Violence is increasing and will most likely continue to increase if we doin't do anything about it. Since 2007, big shootings have happened, but now killing children? That is such a sickening act of criminality. After the Sandy Hook shooting, many people began to associate that shooting with a wider range of problems that are occuring in the United States such as gun control. It is difficult to stop the mentally ill from going on rampages killing people. We have no idea what goes on in their head. Opening of more mental hospitals to admit more mental patients may decrease this violence since many shooters in history do happen to be mentally ill. In the Sandy Hook situation, the mother of the killer did all that she could. She no longer had control over him as he got old since he was way bigger than her. Educators were definitely effect from either being at Sandy Hook when the shooting happened or even just seeing the scene on TV. Teachers across the country are in fear and shock that this happened. Many fear if it will be their school next. The situation those teachers were in was never expected to happen. Those teachers showed great amounts of bravery and they did what they could to save the children. I feel like the media crossed the line on this horrible event. Something this tragic should not have been publicized that much. I think it was wrong to attempt to talk to family of children who were victims. These parents are mourning their losses and shouldn't have to worry about the media being all over them.
In times like this it's extremely difficult to put into words what are you feeling. Every person has their opinion on this and they regularly express it. I believe that guns should be more strictly controlled. I think that people act like just because this child was mentally ill that makes this not as bad and the kid that did this didn’t have control of himself. I say this is 100% false. Countless numbers of people suffer from autism like this young man did and they don't snap like this. These people are normal members of society and it's events like this that give these people a bad name. Also I feel that what needs to be done is stop talking about the killer and focus solely on the victims. When we talk about the killer and give him such publicity we are to a certain extent giving him the recognition he doesn’t deserve. The killer obviously wanted to make a statement and be remembered and us constantly talking about him is giving him the recognition he wanted. As children most of us were sheltered from these actions. We knew what they meant but didn’t understand the in and out of the situation. Now that we are older we begin to understand these things more and more. We had time to grow up and experience these things slowly. For the 6 and 7 year olds who survived, they are forced to grow up and face the real world at such an early age. Their lives will forever be changed and they will live with the memories and scars of this awful crime. In times like this all these people crave for a sense of normalcy and that’s what these people need.
The Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy is truly the saddest thing I've ever heard. Those innocent children and adults that lost their lives will be remembered forever. Adam Lanza should have had medical treatment a long time ago to prevent this, but his mother thought he would be ok just like the other mother's of mass shootings in America. In our school, we are very lucky to have a staff of security guards that protects our students and ensures that no outsiders get into our school. We need more security staffs across the U.S. in all elementary, middle, and high schools so that school is a safer place to go. School is a place where children go to learn, not to be afraid of their surroundings.
It is terrible about what has happened throughout the US lately. It is sad about what has happened in Newtown, CT, it is truly a shame what happened to the young innocent children of Sandy Hook Elementary School. I feel that people with mental illness should all be put into an illness center because you never know what these people are capable of. Also if you have a mental illness you shouldn’t be allowed to own a gun or even have the opportunity to obtain a gun. Parents should have their guns locked up even if their child doesn’t have a mental illness, children should be allowed to ever have a gun in their possession. It terrible how our society is turning out, who goes into an elementary school or a movie theater and just kill people for no reason. It’s crazy how people think now a days and how they could just go and kill innocent people. It’s mesmerizing how our world has turned out.
I don't believe gun control is the issue as much as mental illness is, however I do believe certain guns do not need to be owned by the common man. I understand people are hunters for sport, but one of the guns Adam Lanza had in his possession should in no way be legal. That is not a weapon of self-defense or sport, it is a weapon of slaughter.
However, the true underlying problem remains to be mental illness. Those who are born mentally ill need to be provided with the proper care, counselling, and institutionalization they need to keep themselves under control. It is a hard decision for a parent to put their baby in someone else's care, but it is not worth the risk of them causing harm to someone else's baby (or twenty of them, for that matter). What happened in Newton is nothing short of a tragedy, and it is even more painful knowing if Adam Lanza was in proper control it could have been avoided completely.
All Americans are thinking of this subject and we all are trying to figure out ways to stop it from happening ever again. When children die, we all know something has to change. Gun violence has always been a problem but now it seems to be the most talked about subject. Because of the current situation and what had happened in Newtown, many people think there will be new laws against guns. Because of this gun sales have sky rocketed so people have their guns and not have to deal with the new laws. I believe in this situation that it was the mothers fault; the mother of the man who shot those people was a gun collector. She knew her son had autism she knew her son was bullied throughout school his whole life, why would she show him guns and teach him to shoot them when he had so many problems. I believe there should be laws against having guns in the house of people who have problems mentally. It’s a very tragic thing which has happened and I’m very sorry for the loss of everyone.
What happened in Newtown was tragic, but preventable. First, it is the parents job to see these problems with their children. They are the first line of defense when it comes to identifying the potential mental problems with their kids. Also, in this case, it was the parents fault for exsposing their kid to guns all his life. The mother took her son to the shooting range and had a collection of guns in their house which the kid would later use. Today, Obama wants to make stricter gun laws. This would make it harder for anyone to get guns and would help prevent these tragedies. Something has to be done to make sure things like this never happen again and i don't think anyone is going to let this tragedy go without making changes.
It is truly sad that these kinds of events have to happen. So many lives have been lost and so much pain has been spread to families and loved ones. These events have been occuring more often and something needs to change. I believe that gun control and mental illnesses both relate to these tragic eventes. I think that we need to change the gun control. If a person wants to own a gun, they should be tested to make sure they can handle a gun and not use it to harm others. I dont think that everyone can own a gun because when they do, tragic events occur. We need to control people who own guns and make sure that they can use it only for protection. I also believe that if someone was born with a mental illness they need to go to counciling and be watched. If someone has a mental illness, I think that they should lead a normal life but also make sure that they are sane. It is extremely sad and horrible that children have to die. I feel horrible for the families and the community of Sandy Hook. They are in my prayers.
Tragedy. That is the only word that could possibly describe what happened in Newtown last week. The fact that one man could just walk in and kill the most innocent people, little children, is painful to watch and sickening to those who see. What is sad now though is that more people are concerned with gun control, and not school safety. Like Zack said previously, guns don't kill people, people kill people, and more accurately, sick people kill people. Instead of having stricter gun control, we should boost school security and help the mentally ill. Many people do not deserve and are not fit enough to live in society with other people, and those are the people that need help. One day we will again live in a world where you dont have to fear dying in public places, but untill then, we need to focus on helping those who can't help themself in terms of mental illness and making our school system safer.
I think that is unfortunate and sickening that the innocent children and adults that were in Sandy Hook Elementary School were killed. The killer was heartless and I’m pretty sure everybody is wondering what motivated that man to do what he did. In times like this I think we have to take time away from questioning why, and do more remembering. Even though most of us may not know any of the victims, we should still pay respect to them and think about how fortunate we are for everything that we have. In times of sadness, even though it may be difficult, we must try to look at the Brightside of things. I believe that security in schools needs to be tighter, and that there should be more gun regulation. For example, anybody who is not allowed to drive a car, fly in a plane, or has had any sort of criminal record should not be able to obtain a gun. What happened in Newtown, CT should never have happened and I can’t believe that it did. Rest in peace to those who passed away.
The tragic events of Newtown have influenced the country as a whole. Innocent children and adults had their lives brutally taken from them. However, we must stand back and look at the problems as a whole. Gun laws have been a major topic of discussion. Many say that theyr should be stricter and others argue that we have the right to bear arms. I believe that the gun laws should be stricter but it will not prevent people from obtaining illegal guns. Crime will forever be around us. To prevent things like this from happening in schools, they should lock the doors from the outside. Recently in the news an 11 year old boy was arrested because he brought a gun to school because he felt that he had to protect himself. I believe that children with mental illnesses, as well as adults, should start being monitored and watch carefully.
