Pizza is a Vegetable???

According to Congress, pizza will now be classified as a vegetable.
Read the following ( 2 ) articles about school lunch politics at work. With childhood obesity rates soaring, are we taking a step backward in response to pressure from groups who see it in their interest to serve junk food in our schools?
Please offer a detailed response to this issue.

This is bizzare. How is pizza a vegetable. First of all its greasy and oily, probaly containing the amount of calories in 100 pieces of broccoli. This is just wied how the usda is claiming this to be a veratable. Obesity in children is soaring, and now pizza is a vegatable. Making pizza a vegatable in realitly doesn't change how healthy it is for you, because they'res still going to make it the same. I hope they don't do this even though they already are.

If the pizza is covered in fresh vegetables, then I think it can be considered a vegetable dish. But if it's just a regular, greasy, artery clogging piece of bread with sauce, then it doesn't make sense to call it a vegetable. But honestly, who cares what it's considered, people are responsible for what they eat and should know that it's clearly pizza and not a healthy food. If parents are unhappy with the change, they can make their kids lunch instead.

The fact that this is what the government is actually debating, amidst an “Economic Meltdown”, is alarming. However, in regards to this argument, I do not agree that pizza is considered a vegetable. By definition, a vegetable is a plant or part of a plant used as food, typically as accompaniment to meat or fish, such as a cabbage, potato, carrot, or bean. Pizza is usually made by flour, yeast, olive oil, water, marinara sauce, and mozzarella cheese. Some of these are natural, and are produced to consume; these are the flours, yeasts and cheeses that make up the pizza. The sauce is what defies the potential characterization of being a vegetable. Tomatoes, which are technically a fruit, are used as the main ingredient sure. However, the garlic, oils, and other preservatives added, do not condemn it a vegetable. Even when you buy say an organic pizza; it is simply a healthy compound of food. The whole point of this argument however is so schools can serve pizza and claim that they are serving healthy food. The school lunch form of pizza is greasy, most likely made from canned ingredients, and by no means healthy. As I said I think this entire argument is pointless and inconclusive, and the government should reorganize the priorities of this country at the moment.

Excuse me, but Tomatoes are actually considered a fruit. A vegetable is a raw food you can GROW. I didn't know pizza can grow in a garden now. Where can i buy pizza seeds?

Another thing, the pizza in schools is absolutely disgusting. The school lunches are gross and the cafeteria people who serve you your lunch touch money and counters and then hand you your food. It's not like its organic or whole wheat; it’s processed and has all different chemicals and unnatural products in it. It's just nasty and making this now "okay" in congress eyes is absurd. If anything I wish we had more healthy foods in schools such as fruit cups, fresh foods, or more variety of salads. There is more grease in pizza than actual healthy nutrition.

This is all nonsense. If 2 tablespoons of vegetable sauce makes a food a vegetable then hotdogs, pasta, and French fries are vegetables too.

It is absolutely ridiculous for them to say that pizza’s tomato paste is a vegetable. That is giving everyone an excuse to stop eating vegetables and start eating more pizza. As we all know, pizza can be healthy when made right but most often it’s full of grease which is obviously not healthy enough to be considered a vegetable. At a time where the majority of people in our country are overweight we need to be doing as much as we can to make people eat healthy instead of giving everyone an excuse to keep eating the junk that they already are. This is unacceptable and should not have ever happened in the first place.

There are so many different kinds of pizza out there so to generally classify pizza as a vegetable is insane. I agree that a veggie pizza with cut up onions, asparagus, and mushrooms with limited grease can be classified as a vegetable. But when you take a greasy cheese pizza with BBQ al over it should not be looked at as a vegetable. The only reason Congress is doing this is to make it look like kids are eating healthier. They are trying to prevent childhood obesity from getting to out of control but declaring pizza as a vegetable will not solve anything. There are so many characteristics to pizza that makes it an unhealthy food, even though it’s really good. Next you will see Congress declaring French fires healthy because they have potato inside of them. Declaring foods certain things won’t do anything but changing how the food is produced will.

I find it very horrifying that Congress would even think that the sauce on pizza could be considered a vegetable. The small amount of sauce that is on the piece of pizza is far too small to be even considered a whole vegetable. In addition, tomatoes should not be considered a vegetable since they are actually a fruit. The pizza that is served in school is far from being wholesome or nutritious. It is usually just a piece of nasty bread with a greasy sauce and cheese on top of it. Instead of helping to create better and healthy lunches for the younger generation, we are passing laws which could potentially lead children on a road to obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Congress should be more focused on forcing schools to create healthy alternatives for lunch plans, rather than wasting their time passing these types of laws. We are definitely taking a major step backward in promoting a healthy lifestyle for our children, especially since the percent of children who are obese is increasing rapidly.
Although it is very possible that Congress passed this law under pressure by schools to help save money, I’m sure there are other places in which schools could save money. Even if the school doesn’t have the money to buy organic/wholesome foods, why don’t you make it a school project to grow vegetables? That way, the children would learn how to grow vegetables in a garden and they would be more interested in eating the healthy foods that they help grow. In addition, the schools would not have to buy the vegetables, just some seeds.

I can’t even believe that this is actually a serious debate. Since when is pizza a vegetable? The one someone healthy thing a pizza contains is tomato sauce, and tomatoes technically aren’t even vegetables, they’re fruits. Our country is in an economic crisis and the best way they could figure out to cut corners on school food budgets is making pizza a vegetable? Well that’s great. And aren’t child obesity and nutrition major concerns in this country? I guess not anymore. Anyone who thinks that pizza is a vegetable clearly either was never taught the main food groups when they were in kindergarten or has something seriously wrong with them.

In consideration to all that in going on right now with congress and our country's economic status, it is quite humorous that anything to do with the word pizza is even being discussed behind the thick walls of the White House. Whoever decided one late night that considering pizza to be a vegetable would benefit anything is beyond me, but what really gets me is that it is topic of discussion in the almighty White House, as if its some sort of mystery or controversy...or even something that takes more than a minute to reach a conclusion for. The fact that our government is wasting time discussing in their big, fancy suits and using our tax dollars to debate what a bunch of moms at a schools PTA could have done for free and most importantly, CORRECTLY, bothers me. They would have reached the conclusion very quickly that pizza, is not in fact a vegetable, rather a fatty excuse for food and that swapping it for, lets say a salad, would be much more beneficial to the health of their children than the dollars saved by masking the real issue.

I think making pizza a vegetable is ridiculous. We all know pizza is extremely unhealthy and not to mention tomatoes aren't even a vegetable, it's a fruit. I think it's sad that this is the way they are trying to save money. This is only going to increase obesity rates. However, people will probably know better than to consider pizza a vegetable. This is just another example of how stupid some people are.

how can one say that pizza is even considered a vegetable. there is not a single thing that makes it a vegetable. tomatoes are considered fruits. obesity is increasing because of the increase in prices of healthier foods. a lot of kids arent introduced to fruit and vegtables when they are young. parents buy themselves fast food more then 2 times a week. it isnt a good thing to be selling junk in the school or even consider pizza to be a vegetable. there's cheese and dough and sauce, it has to pre made its not grown from the ground. it is completly insane. school lunches arent exactly the healthiest at all, they get processed food because of high costs so why make pizza considered a vegetable. food that isnt good for you in the first place shouldnt be put into a vegetable category. putting the pizza into the vegetable category will provoke increases in the obesity rates.

I don't think it is right to call pizza a vegetable. Until now, vegetables have been their own food, and have been components of things like pizza. But pizza is composed of more than one ingredient. I think that if you can call pizza a vegetable, then you should be able to call things like bread and cheese vegetables. If you can't, then why is pizza even a vegetable in the first place?

This is absouloutly crazy. Pizza is in no way even close to being a vegetable. Cafateria Pizza is often greesy and unhealthy. Making Pizza a vegtable also doesn't make sense to me. Why should they waste thier time doing so? Making it a vegetable does not change how healthy it is.

Also why is congress spending thier time on this? They should be using thier time to try and create jobs or help the economy. Making pizza a vegtable seems to not only be stupid but also a waste of time.
