Do I agree with the allegations and actions that the former atheltic director partook in? no, however, I do think that it is a shame that such a well respected and highly accreditied football program has been eternily tarnished. I think that Sandusky, the allegded molestor, should be sentenced to life in prison. Sandusky tainted the lives of innocent young boys, as they will forever be scarred and affected by his actions. He took their innocence, and you cannot fix that. Joe Paterno, the head coach of Penn State Football team, should have instantly reported
these actions to the police, rather than trying to conceal the allegations and report them only to other people who would cover it up. Paterno at the time in 2002, did report it to Tim Curley, his boss and athletic director at the time, but did not make sure he passed the information at the time. Joe Paterno is one of the greatest college football coaches of all time, and knowlingly had the power to report this witnessed actions. He was wrong in the sense that he should have reported it, and the fact that he has to step down from coaching is appropiate.
What she said was pretty persuasive. She gave a lot of details into what guy was accused of, and she explained her thoughts on the situation. Her editorial made me feel even more disgusted about the whole situation. What that coach did was beyond wrong and deserves to be put in jail for his actions. Raping kids is sick. But the men who knew about the kids being assaulted should have stepped up and the fact that they didn’t, they also deserve to be fired and banned from Penn State. They’re just as responsible and don’t deserve to be let off. They were so worried about their reputation at the expense of these young boys lives. It disturbs me to think there are people out there who will cover huge and jail worthy lies for people. I hope all these men are charged as all are equally responsible.
Her argument definitely would make me reconsider going to Penn State. There are sexual harassments, discrimination, racial slurs, and now child sex abuse scandals. That’s absolutely ridiculous. I'd feel ashamed if I attended a school like that. She uses good emotional rhetoric to get the reader interested in the article. I don't think this will give the school a great background now for future college students.
Why were there 10 year olds at the college anyway? It's wrong nobody tried to stop this, but it’s easier said than done. Everyone have their moments of not knowing what to do and forgetting what’s right and what’s wrong until they are thrown into the fire. If you are in the situation, you see things differently. We all aren't perfect, even the officials who run the show sometimes get off track. Obviously this is just wrong, and he should lose his career as a coach or mentor. But, the sad part is that he will probably go to jail for a year and come out and do the same thing.
Penn State is known for being one of the most honest and trustworthy colleges in the country; especially there sports programs. They have never been accused of bribing players or cheating during a game. Mainly because of there coach, or now former coach, Joe Paterno. In 1998 Jerry Sandusky quit his job as an assistant coach for the football team, but he still would come to all of the practices as a volunteer. He had all the rights to the Penn Strate facilities, which gave him the chance to sexually abuse the young boys. It is not right at all what Sandusky did. Sexually abusing young boys could be one of the worst, most life damaging crimes someone can commit. It is also not right for Paterno not to do anything about it when Sandusky first got caught. Paterno has been the head coach at Penn State for 46 years and nor his reputation his hurt greatly. He will be known as that really old coach who got fired for being involved in a sex abuse case. It is truly sad how his career is ending.
I find this case to be very upsetting. The fact that Paterno knew what Sandusky was doing and only passed the word off to officials, who did nothing, is very upsetting. If you knew what was being done to these young boys, wouldn’t you want to help protected hundreds of other boys who might be hurt by Sandusky? I also find it disturbing that none of the officials, who were told about Sandusky’s action, did anything. Obviously, they cared more about their schools reputation, than the health and sanity of the boys who were being abused. That said, I believe that Sandusky should be arrested and sent to jail for his horrific actions. Although, I feel that Paterno should have called the authorities when he learned about Sandusky, he shouldn’t be arrested or possibly not even fired from the team. Yes, what he did was morally wrong, but it’s not like he was the one abusing the children. He just made a choice to ignore what he heard.
The author of this article was somewhat persuasive. She used her own real life accountsand stories, such as the discrimination cheerleading story, about Penn State to make the story more personable while using facts and statements to support her argument. The author also included pathos rhetoric to play on your emotions and make her argument more persuasive. The article really made me change my perspective on the school and will probably affect the college choice of many high school seniors. Although I was not applying to Penn State, if I was, I don’t know if I would still want to attend the school, if I got accepted.
Her article was very persuasive. Seeing her as someone who went to that school and cares so deeply for her history there and still not defending it says a lot about her and this situation. I think anyone involved in these horrible acts should be charged. Whether you covered something up or did the act yourself, you still hurt the boy. He could’ve been helped but instead was looked past and his assaulter got to continue living a great and happy life. In no circumstances is it okay to witness something this horrible and just look past it and even worse cover it up and protect the person responsible. Anyone who is even remotely involved in this crime should be immediately fired even if not charged with an actual crime.
The Penn State scandal has attracted a lot of attention and is causing emotions to rise. It’s horrible that higher authorities knew about the situation but chose to sit back and ignore the issue, in an effort to save their reputation. Keep in mind these authorities, who did nothing about the crisis, are also the people who the university trusts to fill the school with students having role model like morals. Those who knew of the scandal acted as a bystander, a follower; a manner which most universities preach against.
The article is well written. The author plays on the emotions of the reader and evokes many different feelings, deepening the meaning of the article.
Roxanne Jones is a great writer, and I’d assume a great speaker by her style in the editorial. The type of rhetoric she uses is mixed, but seems to lean more in the direction of pathos. She brings in an emotional connection when she mentions the discrimination she herself faced at Penn State. She talks about how people created signs telling her to "Go Back to Africa." That totally destroyed the credibility of the school to all readers, even if it was in the 80's. Using that, all of the above information about Sandusky and Coach Paterno seems ten times worse. She creates an image of a corrupt university with a false image of perfection. "We are the good guys," A quote of complete irony, considering the fact that the assistant coach has been suspected to have sexually abused 8 boys. In addition, her ending leaves a strong kick when she thinks back and questions if the sexual abuse was going on the whole time while she was a student. “I feel sick.”
The Penn State Sex Abuse scandal is wrong and gross. The former Athletic director and coach of the football team representing the whole university took part in this scandal and put shame into to university. Before this scandal everyone only spoke good things of Penn State. People there loved being there and were proud to be a part of the university. Now people are ashamed to be a part of the school. Paterno was informed of the child sex scandal in 2002 from a former student that saw Sandusky naked in front of a 10 year old boy. This whole situation is beyond wrong, and everyone that has took part in the scandal should be ashamed.
The author's argument is persuasive about her new outlook on the school she used to cheer for and took all her pride and joy into it. She uses ethos as a type a rhetoric.
Obviously I find it absolutely disgusting how these acts took place in the Penn State facilities . Of course I think that he who committed the crime and those who helped to cover it up should be punished. However, I can’t help but think what I would have done in such a situation. I hope that I would do the right thing and report it to the higher authorities if I knew the campus administrators were trying to cover it up. The abuse these boys suffered will forever change them and they obviously do not deserve what happened to them, and doing anything in my power to stop the harm would be something I’d like to think I’d do. But, this is an extremely awkward position for all involved. It’s not like the guy who witnessed the act didn’t tell Paterno, and Paterno did tell his athletic directors- they did try to make others aware of what was happening. They really didn’t do anything that was wrong; they just didn’t follow through with doing the right thing. They both should have called authorities outside of campus if they were aware that these actions were being brushed under the rug. For this, I do feel that they should properly be punished because they could have easily stopped the sexual abuse suffered by these young children.
She did a great job writing this article. She really appealed to pathos. She appealed to her own emotions and the emotions of others. She showed how she went to Penn State and how her pride for that school was replaced by shame. She also appealed to the emotions of her audience by getting them angry about the scandal. Her writing really made me feel disappointed in Joe Pa and all of the members involved.
What the Child Molester did was sick. He deserves do be prosecuted to the fullest and put in jail. On top of that the fact that he lives near a school is just scary. Not to mention the fact that he was illegally using a charity. Also the other people involved such as Joe Pa deserve to be punished for not reporting this to the authorities.
She is being very persuasive. She appeals to deep emotion. She knows that people today are very sensitive to things such as sex scandals, so speaking out on it and exploiting keeps the reader listening. Penn State almost has a cult following it; it is very respected in the sports field, as well as the trust field. People look up to the college and dream of going there. Now the university can only hope for some pity.
What this lady said was pretty persuasive. I agree with her, that penn state is ruined from all the things that have occured over the years. Herself knowing that all of these things were probaly happening, while she was there, is very disturbing to her. Joe Paterno, the head coach of the football team, should have reported Sadusky, the discrimmination, and the sexuailty discrimmanation that was going on. It is terrible knowing all of these things occured. The coach was just assuming the girl was lesbian. It wasn't a deffinite thing. I deffintely agree with this lady, because Penn State is looked at as a good school, because the success of the sports. Hearing all of these things, just puts you down.
I believe that the conveyed the story very well and brought up all of the major points. What happened to those boys, whether Sandusky is convicted or not, will affect those boy's lives forever. Even after years pass they will never be able to erase from their minds the crimes committed against them with people knowing. They will never again be able to trust someone, especially someone of authority as it was said that someone actually witness a rape, made eye contact with one of the children, and literally walked out. If he does not serve major jail time, something is wrong. Regardless, the only positive coming from this case is that they are creating a new law stating that all citizens must report child abuse once they becoming knowing of it. If they find out about child abuse and do not report it, it will be considered a felony.
The author of the editorial was very persuasive. She gave insight that only a member of penn state could give, and gave a very interesting perspective. As for the whole situation, i think the people who are getting arrested had it coming. To witness something something that will inevitably scar this child emotionally and then not say anything about it is very wrong in my opinion. This childs life will most defiantly be changed forever in a very negative way, and i think anybody involved in this should be brought to justice for it
