The job market is tough for everyone. But this recession has become a jobs disaster for 16-to-19-year-olds. How worried should the youth of America be about this issue?

I feel as though employeers are less likely to hire teenagers when there are so many adults that are unemployeed and probably have more experience. There are places that are teen oriented and if teenagers want to work, and there are so few who do, employeers should embrace that. Everyone is looking for a job, but it is even harder for young kids who probably need to help their parents pay for their college education. People who already have jobs, are keeping them, because they cant retire already. I feel ike american youth should be worried, especially when they want to hit the job market after college. They arent going to have enough experience outside of school in order to be able to get a solid job. Even with my internships, I am worried, and i really hope to find a suiting job.
I feel that the youth of America should be very worried about not being able to get a job. I feel that this is a chain effect because if they do not have money for themselves they will be asking there parents for money, who are having a hard time in the recession as well. I feel that the youth not having a job is a chain effect.
I think that teens should be worried because it will be even harder for teens to get spending money now and won't be able to earn enough money for whatever the reason. It is especially hard if they've never had any expierence before and have to go apply for a job with no expierence and no real basis of evaluating the quality of work.

My parents are constantly pushing me to go out and get a job. And yes, I believe that I should be employed before I go off to school - having a job teaches work ethic, responsibility, and above all else it provides teenagers money of their own to spend on whatever they may want. My parents both had jobs by the age of 14 and worked through their school years up until they got a career of their own. They expect me to do just the same, however, society is much different now a days then what it use to be. The economy plays a huge role in the alteration fo the work field. Because of the faltering economy, most adults who have been laid off from work have dropped down to positions which use to be filled by teens and young adults. Now that those jobs are taken, where can a teen efficiently work?
Although there are problems now, it won't last forever. The economy is cyclic - and this means what goes down eventually will come back up. Sooner or later, the economy will once again be booming, More job positions wil open up and the adults who have settled on lesser pay will rise up to higher positions and free up job offerings for the teenage generation. However, the 16-19 year old age bracket for these years will be effected. As ill-experienced workers, it will be harder for us to find jobs in the long run. And we have to rely on our parents to give us money here and there in order to see a movie or go out to dinner with some friends.

This is an issue that can and will impact my friends and me greatly. Over the last few months I have not been "actively" searching, like everyday, but I have been looking for a part time job. Now that I have a car and more freedom, I need money to pay for my bills and expenses. But where can I find a job? Who is hiring kids under the age of 18? I think America should be very worried about this issue and should try and set a course of action to help teens ages 16-19 find jobs. I need to find a job before I go off to college.

Finding a job has become increasigly hard for teens in America. Landscaping jobs are out of the question, even some some resturant jobs have become hard to come by. I feel that since the economy is suffering, more people are taking on second jobs, such as retail. An eomployer would be more apt to hire the single-mom who needs money, over a teen. So yes, I believe teens should be worried about the future job status.

For teens finding jobs, it is harder than it has ever been. adults are loseing jobs left and right and buisnesses are more likley to hire a more experienced older person then an unexperienced child looking for weekend spending money. the rate of teen unemployment will only increade for the years to come
I think that if you look hard enough you can find a job. But yes it is really hard to find a job. More than anthing, I feel that teen don't want a job enough to go looking hard enough. I know I just took a job and I'm probably going to quit soon. It's more that my parents forced it on me.

Teens should be very worried about the lack of employment opportunities. This is because with the number of unemployed adults, employers are going to choose to hire them over an unexperienced teen. also, employers would be against hiring teens because chances are that they wouldn't do a lot of work if they got the job.

The article makes some good points about the need to hire more experienced workers over teens. One guy said he is looking at applications of people who "worked for $20 an hour in an office" for jobs that normally belong to eager teenagers. In the time of economic downturn and 10% unemployment, the experienced workers probably need the jobs more. This would give kids the opportunity to study and go to school or something more boring to help their future. I don't think it is a "crisis" as described by Joseph Walsh. Things like "teenagers who work tend not to become teen parents" sounds a little general... so is this really outweighing the 5% increase in kids enrolled in school? idk. This is a rough time for all working people and I think people supporting families should go before teens.
I feel that the youth should be worried because its not that theres not enough jobs for teens, theres no jobs avaliable for anyone. Even adult have hard times finding jobs these days. The decline is only going to increase unless something is done to help get us out of this recession. I think we will be fine if we can get ourselves out of the recession but if things continue the way they are, then none of us will have a chance at landing a job anywhere in the near future.
I have definitly noticed that a lot of places who once hired the starting ages of 16-17, have now increased to a minimum of 18 years of age. With recent unemployment rates, adults are being hired as opposed to a younger crowd. They have more knowledge and experience, it is to be expected. I highly doubt this unemployment issue for teens is going to last a really long time, but as of right now, teens should apply for as many places they can and give a full availability just to guarentee themselves SOME sort of income. Spending money should be limited as well. I know that I rarely go out and spend a lot anymore, there are plenty of other things to do with friends just staying home or driving out to cheaper places. Gas money is a big deal for teens right now as well, so, teens should be a little more conscious of their spending.
The job market today is hurting all the age groups, but especially the teens these days because all the jobs that are open will most likely try to hire someone who is older and has more experience than a teenager. A lot of places also don’t want to hire any teen who is under 18 due to all the laws and rules they have to follow. The youth of America should be worried about this, because if this doesn’t improve, the chances of getting work experience, which can help you to get a better job, will be almost impossible to obtain. Here on Long Island it is hard for a teen to get a job, however, compared to other places I don’t think it is that bad because we do have a lot of fast food restaurants and stores that are looking to hire teenagers. Overall, I don’t think the job market is going to improve soon, which is going to be bad because all these teenagers are going to be asking for money from their parents, which may not have to give.

I feel that teens should be worried about the scarcity of oppurtunities they have. It is extremely difficult for teens to find jobs anywhere now. The fact that there are so many unemployed adults makes it even harder for the kids because many companies would hire an experienced adult over a teenager who has never had a job before.

I think that while teen unemployment is a problem, it is not something we should be worried about. Teens are currently losing jobs to addults who need the jobs more then we do. I think it is more inportant for people who NEED jobs to have them. People who need to pay for things like rent and for food and car insurance. Yes its a shame that teens are losing jobs and job experience but I think that we should make room for adults until the economy gets better.

Its getting harder and harder for teens to get jobs. Back when my parents were kids, you could get a job right out of high school. Now you need to go to college just to be a garbage man. A high school graduate and a College graduate can clean grabage just as well as the other. In fact, the high school kid would probebly do it even better because he doesnt mind getting hias hands dirty. Also, nowadays we got all these mexicans taken our jobs. This sucks.
Well of course retailers don't want to hire teens. Teens can't work full time and have many working ristrictions, but need to still be paid the same minimuim wage as a legal adult. One of the other things that is affecting the teen job market is illegal immigration. Illegal immiigrates offer to work in jobs that are normally filled teen for less then minimuim wage and off the books. How are teen expected to compeat will that?
I strongly feel that teens should be worried about this situation. I feel that while students should mostly be focused on school, it's important for them to have other oppertunities available. This is a chain effect and ends up affecting the rest of the family.
I think the job market for teens is going to be high or low depending on the jobs they are trying to get. Obviously, teenagers aren't going to be in charge of a department in a corporation, but they will get jobs in places like tanning salons, and fast food resturants. I don't think that teens should be worried about this issue.
I do think that we will be affected by this for a little while, but I believe that teenage job finding will soon become easier when companies see that hiring teens would be best because they are less demanding of a high salary. Most of us will work for mnimum wage or close to that, so I think that the job market for 16-19 year olds will soon increase.
It worries me more and more when I see adults doing jobs that teenagers typically used to do. It's true that it is harder for teens to get jobs now a days because unemployed adults are taking them away. The only reason an employer would hire a teen over an adult is so that they could pay them less. After all, that does not help that teen either. But can you blame employers? Of course you want people working for you with more experience and responsibility. Hopefully they will realize however, that just because adults are adults, doesn't mean they can do the job better sometimes.
I think the large amount of unemployed teens will have a huge negative effect on our generation. This is because some teens will not be able to afford college and those who do gets a degree won't have any experience in the workforce. Therefore it is less likely to be hired for a job when your 25 because of your weak credentials. And those who are hired will have little experience working with others at a job
Even before the job market experienced problems from the recession, teenagers faced difficulty trying to find a job. It's become even harder now that there are so few openings. Having said this, I feel like this will have a drastic impact on my generation as well as future generations. With older more experienced individuals looking for jobs, it will become even harder for teenagers to find one. Employers are hiring older workers because they have more skills as well as experience. Employers feel as if this will benefit them. I disagree in a way because if we don't start training younger individuals to work, then when the older generation retires the job seekers won't have adequate skills. Younger children desperately need the money to help their parents pay for college and living expenses. Many of us rely on our parents to provide us with spending money. There will soon be a day when our parents won't be able to foot the bill. The youth of American should be very worried about this issue becaue it will somehow find a way to backfire at them. Teenagers need to now more than ever demand job openings and stay committed towards finding a job.

I think that teens should be worried about jobs. personally i have been trying to find a job and noone is hiring and if they are hiring they would rather hire an adult. what employers dont get is that teens these days are having to pay for more and more due to there parents loseing there jobs or getting pay cuts. by hiring teens they are helping out familys because they take the stress of paying for things. the economy will eventually come back up so people dont have to be too worried but companys should start hiring more teens and not just adults. It will help out everyone.
Maybe more teens from comparitively wealthy families are staying in school and going to college, but many students need a job in order to pay for higher education - such as the teen father in the article. I don't think this is going to kill our economy, it is just a side effect from the recession. The Great Depression, and not legislation, is what ended child labor in the United States - this is the same thing. Workers with more experience will always be hired over those with less experience.
Steph Chocko Period 8
I don't feel that the recession has taken a toll on teenagers, rather than the large amounts of adults that have lost their jobs. I think employers would hire an adult over a teenager because they show more stability and would probably stick around for the long run. I believe that teens are used to jumping from job to job and it is easier for them to jump back from a job lose. It was more evident that adults were replacing teens in certain areas because once they lose their jobs they'd find any job to keep a steady income. Fortunately, for my friends and I it has not been hard to find a job during these tough times.
I think that employers, being adults, sympathize more with adults and with the econcomy in a down turn hire them for jobs that teens used to get hired for. I think that some jobs, however, are more oriented towards teens, and should be left to that age group rather than adults who are just out of work. Even though adults have many bills to pay, that isnt to say that teens don't have their own expences. Some teenagers pay for their own car insurance, phone bills, and social lives, which takes a large burden off of their parents. I think jobs shouldn't discriminate who they hire based on age because in the end it influences a family no matter who it is thats working and what their age is.

I think it is definatly harder for teens to find jobs these days. Since the econmy is so bad adults are taking on second jobs or jobs teenagers would normally have just to make ends meet and pay the bills. Of course employers are going to take someone older, mor expirence as to a teenager still in high school that doesnt have any expirence. And now with most places not even hiring teenagers unless their 18 only hurts the younger teens that struggle to find a decent job while still in school.
When it comes to getting a job, i can't say i'm familiar with the routine and process. However, my one friend is a hard worker that is juggling three jobs to pay for her college tuition. The only reason why she is hanging onto three jobs is because they were hard to get originally. I feel it is unfair to discriminate against young teenagers when it comes to jobs. By judging younger teens and not giving them a job, they are not being prepared for the future and the employer is further more making the future a little scarier to encounter.
I currently work two jobs and have not been affected by this, however, that doesn't mean I will never be. Because of the unemployment rate of adults, who all have more work experience than us, the number of adults working in jobs that teens usually held is increasing. Combine this with the bad economic times, resulting in layoffs and decreased hours, and we have a problem. The youth of America should be concerned and we should stay up to date on the job market all the time. Hitting the job market, or lack there of, after college could be a difficult task.
Abby Dante period 2
I feel that the youth of America should be pretty worried about obtaining a job considering our world is going through such a recession. Employeers are definitely going to hire adults over teenagers because adults have more expirence. Adults are more knowledgable and teens are more likely to put less effort into their job. This recession is going to cause a chain reaction because when the kids dont have money they will go to their parents for money who will also be struggling.

I feel that having a job makes a person grow, become more responsible and learn how to manage money. I do feel that emplyeers are less likely to hire teenagers especially during this time. There are deffinately places teens can work and i think that we can handle almost the same job as an older person can, depending what kidn of person they are. I really do think that teens should have at least 1 or 2 years of experience of the working life before going off to college. Sometime i think that teens are babyed because if you think about it in the old times children were working at age 12 and now a days i cant imagine my brother and sister working right now.I feel that the youth of America should be very worried about not being able to get a job.
I think teens do need to start worrying about this issue because as we all get older, our parents aren't going to be there to hold our hands and give us money. Learning the value of a dollar at age 16 rather than 20 or 21 is better these days especially with the recession. I think the first thing going through a teenagers head should be about getting a job. It not only helps you learn how to spend your money wisely, but is also good for having experience in a career setting. I do feel that it is a struggle for some of us because we are stereotyped to be this generation that doesn't care about anyone but ourselves but in reality, we're not all like that. I wish some places would understand that and be more willing to hire teenagers these days.
I think that the youth of america should be worried because with the condition that the economy is in kids are finding that their parents aren't paying for everything they want and money is tight. Not to mention that everything is only going to get more expensive rather than less so this job market problem will leave teens not only without money but some without the things they need like a college education.
