No. Unconstitutional
They do have the right. They have the right because anything that you post on the internet and don't set as private is open to the public. So the colleges can use it as a resource to judge you as a possible candidate. During the college application time period you should be careful what you put on your myspace/facebook or just set it to private.
Colleges shouldnt have the right to look up students on social networking sites. They shouldnt be allowed to not accept you for what you do in your out of school life.
I don't mind colleges looking at social networking sites but they shouldn't be basing their addmisions decisions on what high school students do outside of school. Just because a kid ocassionally pokes smot doesn't mean he shouldn't go to college.
I think the colleges do have a right to look at your facebook or myspace. If you have it set to public, anyone has the right to see it. If you are irresponsible and have pictures or anything else on your website that display you in a negative way, it is your own fault. Just set it to private and then you don't have anything to worry about.
I don't think colleges should have the right to reject a student just based on pictures or how they come across on their facebook page. A person can be completely different in their social life than they are in their school life but the college would never be able to tell, so it doesn't give them an accurate portrayal of a person.
If you don't want people to see what you have on your facebook/myspace, dont make one or set it to private. Also just be responsible about things you put on the site. I don't think that colleges should accept or not accept a prospective student based on their facebook/myspace. The most important factor for getting into college and being in college should be acedemics. But people that have a facebook/myspace should not put anything that could potentially keep them from getting into college on thier site, and they will be fine.
I don't think colleges should be able to judge you based on your facebook and myspace pictures. It's a violation of privacy because it's what you do outside of school not what you do in school. However, you should never post anything you don't want others to see. I'm very careful about what I put on myspace, although I really have nothing to hide, just because I don't want people to get the wrong impression and as a precaution for colleges or even the current school you go to.
A person is pretty much responsible for what they have on their facebook, so it's fair that a college may use it as an admission factor. However I don't believe it should be used as a deciding factor for denial. Close to 100% of high school students drink alcahol, and about 75% have done drugs mainly doja. It is unfair to use this criteria for some and not others. It really should only be implemented if every single college is using it for every single applicant.
I think it's wrong to be able to search potential student's myspace and facebook... I mean, if you are putting it up for the world to see then they have just as much right as any other person to look at it, but for the people that set theirs to private, it's wrong. Colleges are able to look at private pages, and I think thats not right because if someone wants the page to stay private, it should.
Anyone has the right to see what someone posts on a social-networking site, as long as its not set to private. In the case of admisssions officers, they can see whatever is out there. But they should keep something in mind: you can't deny a student admission becuase he or she has pictures partying on his or her facebook or myspace when almost the whole student body of your school posts the same thing. They are suppose to represent your school in a positive manner right? Using social-networking sites as an admissions factor would be hypocritical.
Colleges can look up people on myspace and facebook. They can look on any public website if they like. If you have pictures of yourself or anything else that you dont want other people to see don't put them up or make your page private
I think that colleges do have the right to look at what you post on the internet and it is your responsibility to know what you're getting yourself into. you should know that many people can look at what you're putting up on the internet and should be careful about what you put on. If you dont want someone to be looking at these things you should sent them as private so that they cannot view your profile and you wont have a problem.
I think that colleges have the right to look students up on the internet. Its a very fair way to evaluate the student applying to their school. Kids afraid of schools looking at their facebook/myspace should limit or reconsider what they write and display.
I believe that colleges do have the right to check up on a students myspace/facebook because it is open to the public. If you dont want someone to see pictures of you then you shouldnt be posting them online for the public to see. I do not agree that admissions officers should be rejecting students based on what they see on facebook/myspace because a few pictures may give a misleading conception of the student.
Colleges should not judge you for what you do outside of school, but you shouldn't post anything you don't want them to see because unfortunatly they do judge you. Although I don't have anything bad on my myspace or facebook, I still would prefer that colleges didn't see because they are violating your privacy.
I think colleges do not have a right looking at the social networking sites of applicants. Since students have the choice to omit certain pieces of information from their applications (like test scores) and not have the colleges seek the information anyway to use it against them, students should be able to trust colleges not to view their personal websites.
They don't have the right to check on your social life. colleges should only look at your grades and activities that you want them to see. Also it violates privacy rights of people, you can't really base there oppinion of yourself on what you do with your friends.
i think its a touchy subject and i do firlmy believe that sometimes for the best of the people the gov't should just say, screw privacy and do what they must in order to uphold our national security.
I think that they do have the right. The Colleges want the best students to go to their school, and so they should be able to decide what makes a good student. So if they don't want someone who acts inappropriately than they should be able to see how they act. Also people should put things that they wouldn't want a college to see on the internet.
A smart applicant should know better than to post anything on the internet that could potentially hurt their chance of getting into a college. I believe that while it may be mildly unethical in the sense that it is an invasion of one's personality and privacy, colleges do have the right to know who they are accepting into their establishments.
I do think they have the right to view these networks. Anything floating around the internet airways can be viewed by anyone. Your putting yourself at risk of a job and college if you want to put risky pictures up during your transition periods from high school to college, or from job to job. I don't have a facebook, I'm fine with out people knowing my personal life for now.
I guess anybody has the right to look at networking websites to find more information out about you, after all that is why people use these types of websites, so people can find out more about them. If you are afraid of what is on these sites dont make a profile or dont put bad things up. I dont support the jobs looking at them but i think they have every right to, i am very careful about what goes on my profiles and such.
